Crowd Pleaser

Counts among the very best in a festival's crowd discipline, and unlocks a better way to handle “A Tall Tale”. A specialist pick for festival fixtures.

Behaviour effect

Crowd Pleaser carries no behaviour coefficients. The game maps none to it, so it leaves a hero's combat AI untouched. What it changes sits outside the fight.

How a festival scores a hero

Festival gatherings judge heroes in three disciplines: wit, valour and crowd. A hero’s score in a discipline is built from the attributes that discipline uses, a bonus for their record (delves, seasons served and accolades), any rehearsal they have put in, their convictions, the performance roll on the day, and a set of trait bonuses.

Crowd-Pleaser adds +5 in the crowd discipline. Here is the whole crowd table:

Trait Crowd score
Charismatic, Crowd-Pleaser +5
Glory Hunter +4
Vain, Inspiring, Old Voice +3
Arrogant, Hopeful, Ambitious +2
Stoic, Traditional, Cowardly −2
Humble, Lone Wolf −3

The bonuses stack, so a hero who is both Charismatic and Crowd-Pleaser starts 10 points up. Since 2.1.9, Crucible-Raised also adds +3 here, as it does in every discipline. Crowd-Pleaser adds nothing in wit or valour.

A worked example

Two heroes with the same attributes and record enter the crowd discipline. One is Crowd-Pleaser and Charismatic: +10 from traits. The other is Humble and Stoic: −5. Before the performance roll, the first starts 15 points ahead. The day’s roll can swing a result, but a 15-point head start is rarely overturned.

Festival results feed renown, and renown unlocks better contracts, patrons and events. If your guild competes, putting the right hero forward in each discipline is free renown, and a Crowd-Pleaser is the obvious choice for the crowd.

“A Tall Tale”

Once the guild has been around for a year, a hero may start embellishing a delve story. A Crowd-Pleaser or Charismatic hero on the roster can take over and tell it properly: the guild gains 2 renown, the teller gains 3 morale, and the original boaster loses 1 morale but gains +2 bond with the teller. See the events page.

The rest of the trait

  • Bounty jobs like it. Bounty postings list Crowd-Pleaser among their liked traits, adding 5% to the hero’s suitability.
  • Forks. As party leader, a Crowd-Pleaser leans +1 toward the “Lair” side room with its named foe, about two times in three with nothing pulling the other way. Treasure rooms and Sealed Doors get no lean.
  • Flavour. Quest reports have Crowd-Pleaser lines, and on pair duty the hero speaks with the “warm” voice shared with Charismatic, Companionable, Generous, Inspiring, Team Player, Easygoing, Peacemaker and Hopeful.

The trait has no combat numbers and never appears in a delve report. The hero card links it to Leadership; that link is descriptive and does not raise the attribute.

Who should carry it

  • Any hero you would put forward at a festival anyway.
  • Charismatic heroes, to make them the guild’s festival specialist and the default teller for “A Tall Tale”.
  • Bounty hunters, where it is one of eight liked traits.

It is not worth building a delving roster around: almost all of its value sits outside the dungeon.

Conflicts and rarity

Crowd-Pleaser can never appear with Humble, which counts against a hero in the crowd discipline.

  • Rarity: common, positive · draw weight 100 of 6,365 · about 1 recruit in 25
  • Founding draft: any card.
  • In the wiki’s archive: first present in the 2.1.8 build (absent from 2.0.7).

Recruiting

Situational. A small positive for guilds that take festivals seriously and run bounties, and close to neutral for those that do not.
